Azalpena

The group of "Laser Physics and Photonic Materials" (LASES) of the UPV / EHU-CFM is specialized in the investigation of light-matter interaction processes in new photonic materials with potential applications in the fields of optoelectronics (optical amplifiers, lasers, light converters, laser cooling ...) and biomedicine (nanostructured optical tracers, multispectral 3D images, sensors).

A significant part of the research is devoted to the study of the luminescent properties of new laser materials (crystals, glasses, ceramics and micro-nanostructures). In particular, to the understanding of the influence of the host matrix on the spectroscopic properties of active ions (or molecules) to improve the quantum efficiency of their emissions and to determine both their potential in the laboratory and in specific technological applications. These studies cover a broad spectrum of activity ranging from pure basic research to experimentation with prototypes including their design, simulation, operation and the patented.

Research in optical characterization of photonic materials by using high resolution spectral and temporal spectroscopies, theoretical and experimental studies of laser-induced cooling processes in solid-state materials, theoretical and experimental studies of light propagation and confinement in micro-nano structurated inhomogeneous media: random lasers and biomedical applications, design, make up, and simulation of optoelectronic devices such as optical amplifiers, lasers, light conversors, etc.
